Eight years ago, I recorded a piece of music titled ๆป…ๅŠซๅง‹ไนŸ็ต‚ๅŠๆœ—็œผ, which roughly translates as โ€œfinally achieving clear vision, just when the era/kalpa of destruction is beginningโ€. Its underlying idea is a juxtaposition of despair, sadness, and resignation due to a realization of very dark times ahead with elation due to a sudden discovery or great insight (which, given the circumstances, will probably be entirely useless). Dissonant Reality

There is a persistent belief among both scientists and non-scientists that good theories must be somehow beautiful or elegant or something similar, because reality itself is ultimately โ€“ in some relevant sense โ€“ harmonious; or in other words, that science must be beautiful/โ€‹simple/โ€‹elegant/โ€‹etcera because the laws of nature are beautiful/โ€‹simple/โ€‹elegant/โ€‹etcera. This belief is particularly influential in physics and mainstream economics (which likes to mimic physics or an image thereof as much as possible).
